Our focus story has been 'The Tale of the Whale' - a story about a child who, after riding on the back of a whale, discovers that although the sea can be a wonderful place, it is being spoiled by plastic. We have been learning how we can look after our world; we can put rubbish in the bin, recycle some objects and use charity shops and turn lights off when we don't need them. We really are learning how to make sure our world stays a beautiful place.

When we read 'Monkey Puzzle' we learnt that some baby animals look like their parents and some do not, like tadpoles and caterpillars.
We also learnt that some animals hatch when they are born and some animals are born live. We have really enjoyed learning about animals over the last couple of weeks and the children's pictures are demonstrating their understanding. Ps. We also learnt that snakes coil - see coiling in provision. We have been reading 'The Tiger who came to Tea'. We have been learning that tea is a plant and it is dried and crushed into tea bags. We have been using a teacup and saucer to taste tea. Most of us really enjoyed it.
We have also been learning about the artist, Steven Brown who paints animals in different colours. This left us imagining what it would be like if a multi-coloured tiger came to tea... Today we have looked totally awesome!!!! Everyone has dressed up and had fun. As you know, we love stories in Bear Cubs and today we've listened to a new one; 'The Leaf Thief' - squirrel thinks someone is stealing the leaves but he finds out it's actually the wind. We have been searching for new leaves in the school grounds because the wind took most of the leaves before Christmas! We have found green leaves and we saw some frogs laying frog spawn too - this must mean it's spring!
Back in the classroom we have been making model squirrels. We learnt how to make cylinder shapes with paper before, when we made rockets and chinese lanterns. This week our key text is 'Six Dinner Sid' - a story about a cat who lives on a street of six houses and visits each one every day for a dinner until... one day he gets a cough and has to go the vet.
We have made a Vets role play in class where children are learning how to speak as a receptionist, owner of a pet and of course a vet. "I'm just going to give him a shot." "I wonder, has he been playing in the garden at all because he's got a thorn in his ear." "Good morning, do you have an appointment?" We have also been making homes for pets in construction and small world. Over the past fortnight we have been reading pirate stories. Through this we have learnt new vocabulary and had so much fun playing creatively.
As part of our learning about old and new toys, the children brought their own teddies into class on Wednesday - they had a fab day. The children painted them, introduced them to their friends, read to them and showed them around the classroom. Some of the teddies were new and some were older; they even belonged to the children's parents.
In Maths, we have been working hard to show numbers on our fingers - we have been working on showing numbers the quickest way. This week, we have learnt how to show 6 and 7 too. We know 6 is 5 and 1 more and 7 is 5 and 1 more. We have been learning about life in the past from reading our key text 'Peepo'. We have been using a big information book to find out more. We particularly enjoyed learning that toilets used to be in a hut outside because homes didn't have all of the pipes for bathrooms. Imagine going to the cold, damp toilet outside in the middle of the night!!!!! I love how children are practising reading with their friends. The children will make very good teachers one day!
This week we have been reading with fox characters. We have noticed the foxes are all sly... In provision, we have been drawing maps from the story, making traps to catch the fox and drawing WANTED posters.
Over the last few weeks we have been reading 'The Smartest Giant in Town'. We have been building gigantic buildings, learning about our own town, Barnsley, drawing maps, making thank you cards to George the giant. We've loved it and our poems about GIANTS are epic! We have also been learning about the word 'squelchy' - we found a bit of mud that was squelchy but we had lots of fun squelching jelly!
