After completing tag rugby in PE last half term, the two children below wanted to take their learning further and have joined Dodworth Miners ARLFC. They have really enjoyed the sessions so far and one even played his first game at the weekend. Well done boys!

Today, the children have been continuing their work on natural disasters. We have been looking at volcanoes. We have been learning about the tectonic plates and the ways in which they move. We completed a practical lesson using Oreos. We also learnt about the Ring of Fire and where that is situated.
Today, we are writing up our first independent masterpiece in writing. We have completed two weeks completing a modeled and shared version of a persuasive leaflet to persuade somebody to go to Peak Venture. We looked at some really funny photographs to go with this! Now, we have handed over the control to the children and they had to create their own version of Peak Venture and then complete a persuasive leaflet about that. I gave the children loads of time to plan and create their own version. There are some super ideas. The children then had to write and structure their own leaflet with no adult support. This was quite challenging and previously writing has been very scaffolded but the children are starting to show what they can do. Each child had a completely unique adventure centre and they all had different audiences to write for. Some chose younger children and some chose older children. Well done everybody! You have worked well for the past three weeks!
Today, Year 4 have been completing more work on FMSLogo. We are really enjoying this practical unit and so far, we are doing extremely well. We have looked at creating code for different numbers and letters and today we completed some code to create a shape. The shape in questions was a square. To make a square, we had to:
Go forwards 100 Turn right 90 degrees Go forwards 100 Turn right 90 degrees Go forwards 100 Turn right 90 degrees Go forwards 100 Turn right 90 degrees To put that into code, we would put, FD 100 RT 90 FD 100 RT 90 FD 100 RT 90 FD 100 RT 90 However, today, we used the repeat function so instead of writing out the entire thing, we just had to write: Repeat 4 [FD 100 RT 90] We then looked at making a smaller and larger square and thinking about changing only one thing in our code to do this. It was really interesting and the children were able to create and amend code really well. In Science, we have been learning about sound. We have been learning that sounds are created when something vibrates. We have looked at a range of different objects that make sound and seen the vibrations that are caused. We really enjoyed working with tuning forks and looking at how they make water splash when it is put into it. Thank you to all of the children that brought in musical instruments to show this further.
Today, we were extremely lucky to have a professional football referee visit our school. He showed us some amazing photographs and videos of himself in action and also brought in professional equipment that he uses in matches. As a class, we were able to think of a tools/ equipment that we could design to help the referee out. The children had some fantastic ideas including: waterproof tops, solar panel flags and even a referee bear that would sit on the shoulder of the referee to help him, or her, out. The children were fantastic throughout and their behaviour was superb. At the end of the session, they were able to ask questions and even get an autograph. They were very excited!
Yesterday, we looked at dividing a 1 digit number by 10. Today, we extended that learning and looked at a 2 digit number divided by 10. We like to be practical in Year 4 so we got the children out of their seats and got them moving along their own place value grid. We also looked at different representations of numbers using counters and place value disks. Well done to everybody. We had 100% achieving green.
We are having a huge push on vocabulary within our Guided Reading lessons. One aspect that we have been looking at is using a dictionary to locate a word using the first 3 letters of that word. We have found the word in the text first and then found the definition as we have found that certain words have multiple different definitions. We must find the correct one.
Year 4 are continuing their work with swimming as part of the KS2 National Curriculum. The children are split into 2 groups. We have a more confident group and a group that is new to the water. It is great to see the progress that they are making. At the start, we had some children who were scared to get their faces wet but now will jump in off the sides, blow bubbles and start to swim using pancakes and noodles. We also have children who are completing a range of strokes in the deep end. Well done to everybody that is giving 100%!
Yesterday, we started our final stage of our pencil case making mission. We have started the creating.
We have learnt all of the skills: Running stitch Whip stitch Back stitch fastenings (buttons and press-studs) Appliques Designing Keep posted to see what the final products look like. I have to say though, so far, so good. |
