Today was our Sports Day and despite the rainy start to the event, it was brilliant! All the year 2s impressed everyone with their fantastic team spirit, effort and behaviour. Blue team won the overall event but every child should feel so proud that they took part and gave it their best go! Here are some pictures for you to enjoy.

Today in RE year 2 learnt about a celebration within Judaism. Around September to October, Jewish families celebrate the Festivals of Tabernacles, (which is also called Sukkot) by building a sukkah. A sukkah is a hut where Jews lived during their years of living in the desert. A sukkah must have three walls and a roof. During Sukkot, Jews remember when God freed them from slavery in Egypt. They left Egypt and wandered in the desert for forty years before they reached the Promised Land of Israel.
The children worked in pairs to make a model of a sukkah which had a roof made of things from nature and walls decorated with pictures that remind them of the harvest. Today, Kexborough celebrated world book day and what a fabulous day we had in year 2! Our book focus today was 'Superworm' by Julia Donaldson. We began by creating our own wanted posters to help find him and then wrote our own reply to the posters. We read lots of stories and discussed our favourite books. We even saw a whole school parade where we admired all the amazing costumes in school. The children made such a great effort and looked amazing. Here are some pictures!
Today we began our new Art unit- '3D Art'. We will be using clay this half term to mold and create our own pinch pot and tile. Today we practiced different techniques when using clay including rolling, stretching, squeezing and pinching. We also used a fork to create patterns and etch marks into the clay. All the class really enjoyed it and are looking forward to using this material more in the next few weeks.
Year 2 have had so much fun today for number day! During the morning we completed our own Smarties investigation where each pair collected data about the colours of their Smarties and then presented this data in their own bar chart and pictogram. They then used the data to answer questions like 'what is the difference between the number of pink and brown smarties?' Then the best bit... they got to enjoy them during morning play time.
This afternoon, we have enjoyed lots of different number games including the classic game of beetle which the children really enjoyed. Let them show you at home it was great fun! Then we had a code breaker to do in class where we worked out the number the picture was worth in a number sentence. Next was bingo with numbers to 50 which is brilliant for our number knowledge and getting better at quickly recognising numbers. Finally our fantastic Mrs Cookson baked cakes and gathered the children to learn about fractions. At the beginning of the session lots of the children decided that 1/12 was the biggest fraction and they would rather have 1/12 of the cake than 1/2. However after cutting the cakes into fractions we could clearly see that the smaller the denominator, the bigger the piece as long as the numerator is the same. All the children have really impressed me with their effort today with their outfits but also their attention in class and we have had a brilliant day. Here are some of the photos we took during our morning activities. This week, year 2 learnt a new song where they had to sing in groups and in harmonies. They did really well! Here is a short video for you to enjoy! This week year 2 took part in bulb planting in our local community. The children had a great (and muddy) time digging the soil and planting ready for daffodils to flower in the Spring. Happy new year, we hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
This half term our writing will focus around animals, in particular nocturnal animals. In class we will be reading the book, 'The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark' as a hook for our writing. To begin the half term, we will be writing a non chronological report all about nocturnal animals. To introduce our new unit, we have introduced two friends to our class so the children could carefully look and compare. Meet our owls! You may have noticed that our blog has been quiet over the last few weeks and that is because we have been super busy in year 2 learning songs and putting together our Christmas performance. Bear cubs, year 1 and year 2 have worked exceptionally hard and made us all so proud when they performed this week. Here are some photos we got of the children that had parts on stage.
Well done year 2! |
